Software that Doesn't Run on Linux
No Linux Version
- Affinity: Neither the current version owned by Canva nor the old versions, Affinity 1 or Affinity 2. In fact, there is a general lack of good image editing software that runs natively on Linux. There is always Gimp, but I hate Gimp.
- There is a project to get Affinity to run using Wine.
- I have tried following the steps to get this up and running, but I’m getting held up on this step here.
- There is a project to get Affinity to run using Wine.
- Scrivener: I need to experiment to see if I can get it to run on Wine.
- Claude Desktop: This isn’t really a huge deal, because you can easily run Claude as a PWA, but you lose some of the features unique to the desktop app like local MCP, filesystem access, and the new Dispatch feature, which allows you to control a Claude desktop session from your phone.
Linux Version Sucks
- TickTick: Doesn’t support global shortcuts or desktop widgets. Normally I wouldn’t care, but I’ve gotten into the habit of using desktop shortcuts to quickly add todos, and I like the pomodoro timer in TickTick as a desktop widget.
- I was at least able to map a GNOME custom shortcut to launch TickTick. I mapped it to Super+Z, so theoretically all I need to do is Super+Z and then hit n to create a new task, but it’s kind of annoying.
