Writing Tools
An evergreen list of the tools I use for writing.
- Obsidian is the main tool I use for writing. See my detailed writup on Obsidian.
- Scrivener is fantastic for long-form writing, such as working on a novel or a script. It allows you to keep your research and reference files as part of your Scrivener project, easily edit and piece together your scenes, and even export manuscripts into industry-standard formats for submitting to a publisher. I’ve used Scrivener extensively when I’ve played around with writing longer pieces. If I ever write a book, it will be in Scrivener.
- iA Writer is another Markdown editor that is cross-platform. I have mostly used the Android version, although it is available for Windows, Mac, and iOS as well. It’s very simple, and has a minimalist, clean, and uncluttered interface that allows you to focus on what you’re writing. Pair your phone with a Bluetooth keyboard, and you’ve got a very nice, portable writing environment you can easily set up at a coffee shop or when traveling.
